Whether you’re doing some target practice or bowhunting big game, it’s unlikely that some rainfall is going to hold you back.

Sure, your vision becomes obscured and the arrows feel a little heavier to shoot, but as your bow becomes drenched in water, you’ve probably asked yourself:

Will it hurt my bow to get wet?

It won’t hurt your bow to get wet. In fact, most bows can be used under the rain without running into any problems. However, there are some things that you need to be aware of, like how to perform proper maintenance after bowhunting in the rain and which parts of your bow are most susceptible to damage.

In this article, I’ll cover what happens if your bow gets wet, how to protect it from the rain, and how to inspect and maintain your bow after using it in rainy conditions.

Let’s get started!

What Happens If Your Bow Gets Wet?

You can shoot your bow in the rain as much as you want. Most bows are waterproof, so they won’t be damaged if they get wet.

If you own a compound bow, rainfall should be the least of your concern. Compound bows are made of plastic and anodized aluminum, which makes them completely waterproof.

Wooden bows are much more susceptible to rainfall damage, but thankfully, they’re coated with a layer of wax-resin, which is highly resistant to water damage.

However, there are parts in your bow that are sensitive to the rain, like the little bolts and screws. These parts are made of metal and can easily rust if you don’t pay attention to them.

You should also frequently inspect your wooden bow to check if it needs an extra layer of protection. Waxing your bowstring regularly is essential, but you may also need to give your bow a fresh coating every few years.

Bigger parts, like the limbs, axles, and the riser, won’t be affected by rain. With that said, you have to dry your bow completely before storing it.

Storing your bow when it’s still wet is a recipe for disaster. The water will cause the bolts and screws to rust, which may render the whole bow unusable.

What Happens If Your Arrows Get Wet?

Your arrows won’t be damaged from the rain, but they might make it harder for you to shoot them.

For example, the water can soak up the feathers in the fletchings and make your arrow heavier. This will significantly impact your precision and make it harder for you to hit your targets.

If you live in an area where it constantly rains, it’s best if you buy arrows with plastic fletchings to avoid this problem. The plastic fletchings won’t soak up with water, and your performance won’t be affected.

Another tip is to avoid taking your sweet time before shooting your arrows. By doing so, the rain won’t have enough time to drench your arrows and make them harder to shoot.

How to Prepare for the Rain

Do you know the feeling when it’s pouring and all of a sudden you can’t hit any of your targets?

This isn’t just the rain affecting your vision; it’s your bowstring getting drenched in water.

As your bowstring becomes heavier, it’ll get progressively harder for you to land your shots.

This is why you need to frequently wax your bowstring. This will keep it dry for longer, protect it from water damage, and enable you to land your shots accurately.

You don’t even need to send it to a professional; waxing your bowstring is extremely easy!

If it starts raining and you feel your bowstring getting heavier, pluck it a few times before shooting.

Keep Some Plastic Bags Handy

There are some extra steps you could take before shooting in the rain that would make the experience much more tolerable.

If you don’t want your wooden bow to get drenched with water, how about covering it with a plastic bag?

This simple trick will protect your bow and all the little screws and bolts. In addition to this, it’ll also cover your quiver and keep all your arrows safe.

Cover Your Sight

Having a sight becomes a huge nuisance during rainfall. Just a few droplets can mess up your vision, and if you’re constantly wiping it, you might accidentally scratch it.

This is why I suggest you use a sandwich bag or a small plastic bag to keep your sight covered. Only take the bag off when you’re taking a shot, and cover it again afterward.

Lastly, you don’t want to use any towel to wipe your sight. Instead, buy some dedicated wipes that are gentle on the optics and won’t get it smudged.

What to Do If Your Bow Gets Wet

The most important thing is to never store your bow when it’s still wet. This will absolutely wreak havoc on your bow, even if it’s coated in wax resin or made of plastic.

When you’re done with your bow, wipe down all the parts before storing them. This includes the screws and bolts that are susceptible to rust.

You can use a paper towel to wipe down your bow, but drying your bow alone isn’t enough.

Using some oil and a toothbrush, gently start lubricating the screws, bolts, sight, and limb to make sure it can withstand another practice session in the rain.

Finally, make sure there’s no water in the quiver, and wipe your arrows one by one until they’re completely dried.

What Happens If You Dry Shoot a Bow?

Dry-shooting is one of the worst things you can do to your bow. If you don’t know what dry-shooting is, it’s basically drawing your bow and shooting without having an arrow lined up.

When you dry-fire your bow, an incredible amount of potential energy is created in the bow, namely in the limbs and the riser.

The limbs flex in anticipation of diverting all of this energy into the arrow. This is why when you fire an arrow, you usually feel the vibration throughout the whole bow.

Now, take the bow out of the equation, and all of this energy will stay in the bow rather than transferring into the arrow.

This will cause your bow to become damaged, and possibly, cause a serious injury to you or a bystander.

If your bow has been dry-fried, you shouldn’t use it again before taking it to a professional. There, your bow will be inspected and any damage will be fixed.

Similarly, if you’ve dry-fired your bow and see any cracks or signs of damage, don’t attempt to fix it yourself.

In Conclusion

Rainfall can definitely impact your performance, but thankfully, it won’t damage your bow.

All you need to do is dry it completely after use, oil the metal parts, and regularly wax the bowstring.

So, we know that we can take our bows outside when it’s pouring, but what about archery targets? Can they withstand some rainfall? Click here to find out!

The longest arrow that landed on target was shot from a whopping 450 yards. This incredible feat was achieved by the Hungarian archer, Josef Monus.

Archers aren’t required to be able to land such a shot, but they should be able to consistently hit close-range targets. Sights are a great way to make that happen.

Your bow sights should help you land consistent shots starting from 10 yards up to 70 yards. The sight can have a single adjustable pin or multiple pins for various distances with minimum to no adjustment. They’re fairly easy to attach and calibrate.

It’s not common for some archers to use their bows without a sight, but if you want to up your game over longer distances, you should consider a sight for your bow.

Read on to learn more about the different bow ranges and how to sight your bow.

What Ranges Should You Sight Your Bow?

The most common ranges start from 10 yards for beginners, all the way up to 70 yards. Having a sight is not a must, but if you plan to shoot beyond 20 yards, a sight is recommended.

Check out this article, as well as this one, to see how far bows can shoot accurately.

There are multiple sights from many manufacturers that you can attach to your bow to enhance your aiming experience.

The sight consists of a ring-shaped housing that you attach to your bow. Inside the housing, you will have one or more pins. Each pin is calibrated by the archer to a certain distance.

The most common types of sights have either one, three, or five aiming pins.

1-Pin Sight

The one-pin sight is often movable, you can adjust the pin according to the distance you desire.

One-pin sights offer the advantage of being straightforward, you won’t have to select a sight for every distance, you can simply move your pin according to the distance you’re planning to shoot from.

However, if you’re hunting a deer, for example, and it moves toward or away from you, you’ll have to adjust the pin accordingly. This can be a disadvantage if the first arrow doesn’t land where you wanted and the deer starts to run away.

3-Pin Sight

The three-pin sight is the most versatile. You can set the three pins to any distance you like. The most common configuration for the three-pin sight is 20, 40, and 60 yards.

It’s easier to use than the five-pin sight because It’s much easier to focus on one of three pins rather than one of five. Additionally, in most three-pin sights, you can also move the sights up and down to change the effective distance of each pin.

5-Pin Sight

The five-pin sight is the one you should go for if you don’t want to constantly keep modifying the pins for different distances. You can permanently adjust each pin for a certain distance, and since there are five of them, you’re less likely to need further modifications.

However, the eye finds it difficult to align one out of five pins with the target. If you’re not experienced enough, it’s best to avoid this sight for now.

We talked a lot about adjusting the sight. The reason behind that is that most sights need calibration before you can reliably use them. How to do that? Read on.

3 Tips on Sighting Your Bow

Installing the sight on your bow is simple, but calibrating it is a little challenging. For starters, you need to be able to hit the bullseye consistently without the sight at close range.

The reason behind this is that you’ll calibrate the sight based on how far the bow goes off the mark. If the bow misses the mark because of your wrong form or lack of skill, you won’t calibrate your sight correctly.

To be more convenient, we’ll discuss how to adjust the most common sight, the three-pin sight. We’ll assume that we want the top pin’s shooting distance to be 20 yards, followed by 30 and then 40 yards, respectively for the other two pins.

Adjusting the 20-Yard Pin

Firstly, stand 20 yards away from the target. Then, shoot five arrows. The arrows should all land in the same area even if it’s not the area you’re aiming for. If the arrows are scattered, then your form or aim isn’t correct.

We’ll assume that the five arrows landed above and to the left of where you’re aiming. Loosen the sight housing and move it slightly up and left. Then, shoot five more arrows.

Keep doing this until the five arrows land where you’re aiming.

Remember, move the sight housing towards the deviation of your arrows which in our example is up and left.

Adjusting the 30-Yard Pin

Now is the time to adjust your 30-yard pin (the middle pin). This is when things get a little complicated.

Use the 30-yard pin and shoot five arrows at your target from a 30-yard distance. If the arrow doesn’t land where you shoot, then you have one of two scenarios:

The rest of your bow may not be tuned correctly

The 30-yard pin might need adjustment

The correct order of things is to make sure that your bow rest is tuned correctly first, then adjust the pin. Here’s how you should go about doing so:

The Bow Rest Adjustment

Keep in mind that if you’re using a longbow, you won’t have to worry about adjusting the rests since longbows have none. Check this article to know more.

Use the 20-yard pin to shoot two arrows from a 30-yard distance, then two more arrows from the 40-yard distance.

The arrows will land lower than your aim, which is normal. However, if they keep consistently landing to the right or to the left of the target, then your bow rest needs to be readjusted.

Remember when we said that we move the sight housing towards the error? This time we will do the reverse. If your arrows are landing to the left, then move your rest to the right.

The movement should be minor. A tweak as little as 1/16 of an inch can make a big difference. Keep adjusting the rest until the arrows stop deviating left or right.

The Pin Adjustment

You now have your rest well-aligned, it’s time to go back and adjust that 30-yard pin. Shoot five arrows from a distance of 30 yards at your target.

The arrows won’t land right or left to your target now because you adjusted the sight housing and the bow rest.

The only error you should get at this point is the arrow landing too high or too low. You’ll adjust the pin itself in the direction of the error to fix it.

Adjusting the 40 Yard-Pin

Adjusting the 40-yard pin shouldn’t be any different from the 30-yard pin now. If the arrow lands too low, move your pin down and vice versa.

Sights Are Your Crosshairs

Putting a sight on your bow and adjusting it to specific distances is similar to crosshairs in firearms. All you have to do is focus on the pin that corresponds to the distance you’re shooting from.

Before you do that, though, you need to correctly calibrate your sight so you can reliably use it. Being able to land consistent shots in archery is one pleasant feeling that you don’t want to miss.

Archery is a beautiful sport to practice. Once you learn how to grip your bow correctly, you feel like you can make your arrows fly as much as you like.

That is true until you start to compete with someone else. There can’t be competition without a set of rules to ensure fairness.

So, what are the rules of archery?

The rules of archery are a few sets of rules to ensure the safety, fairness, and reliability of results between competing archers. These rules start from the type of bows, arrows, and shooting time all the way up to the shooting target, its distance, and its design.

The rules may slightly vary between different types of competitions, so we’ll use the Olympic rules as our benchmark for this article. Let’s get the rules of archery explained.

The Shooting Target

The archery shooting target differs in size based on the competition, but it always has the same design. It consists of 10 rings that get smaller as you approach the center.

They’re numbered ascendingly from the outside to the inside and they have five different colors.

The outer two are called one and two and they are colored white. The following two are black, and then you get blue and red. The last two circles are gold.

In the Olympics. The diameter of the target is 122cm. These targets are quite expensive. Read this article to know why.

The Equipment Rules

We’ll divide our equipment into three categories: the bow, safety equipment, and arrows.

The Bow

Most competitions are done with compound and recurve bows. In the Olympics, only recurve bows are allowed. See this article if you want to know more about both bows.

The type of bow should be the same between the competitors, a competition is deemed unfair if one archer is using a compound bow while the other archer is using a recurve bow.

There are no restrictions on the bow’s manufacturer, but the bow must have a handle (grip), two limbs, a riser, and a string.

It’s allowed to use sights, clickers, and stabilizers. However, it’s not allowed to have release aids or electronics that connect to the bow.

Safety Equipment

All sorts of safety equipment are allowed as long as they don’t give an unfair advantage to the shooter. Such equipment includes but isn’t limited to vests, gloves, and glasses.

Equipment like gloves don’t give you an advantage over your opponent but they may enhance your archery experience. Check out this article to understand how.

The Arrows

The arrows could be made from aluminum, fiberglass, or carbon fibers. However, both contestants must be using the same type of arrows.

The maximum arrow shaft diameter shouldn’t exceed 9.3 mm. Also, each competitor should have their name on the arrow for easier identification.

If any equipment is damaged during the competition, the archers can appeal to the judges to have their equipment fixed or replaced. The compensation time is left for the judges to decide.

Scoring Rules

Archers take turns of 20 seconds in shooting their arrows onto the target. When they’re done shooting, this is called “an end.”

As of April 2010, archery in the Olympics has been using the set system. In the first round, the archers shoot 72 arrows over the course of 12 ends (six arrows per end).

Then comes the elimination rounds where archers shot six arrows over three ends. In the finals, three arrows are shot over five ends.

To beat your opponent, your score must be higher than theirs. To do that, you should get more points than them.

Depending on where the arrow lands, each circle gives you a number of points equivalent to the number given to the circle. For example, if you hit circle three (black), you score three points.

If an arrow lands on a line of a circle, the archer receives the higher value point. For example, if the arrow lands between circle six and circle seven, the archer gets seven points.

If the archer misses the target completely, they get no points, but if the arrow bounces off the target, the archer gets the points depending on the mark made by that arrow.

On rare occasions, if an arrow shoots through another arrow (Robin Hood rule), the archer gets the same amount of points as the arrow they shot through.

If the target falls for whatever reason during shooting, extra time is given to the archer as compensation.

Tiebreakers

When both archers end up with the same score, they end up having a tie. However, there must be a winner.

In most competitions, the winner will be the archer who scored more arrows inside the inner golden circle. If the number of points is still the same, then the following circle is used.

In the Olympics, the winner is decided by a shoot-off. Both archers are allowed to shoot one arrow and the one who scores closer to the center wins.

Timing Rules

Archers are given a time frame depending on how many arrows they will shoot at each end. Each archer is given two minutes for three-arrow ends, and four minutes for six-arrow ends.

The beginning of the given time frame is indicated by whistles. The archers are signaled to move to the shooting line with two whistles.

The time frame begins with the second signal, which is one whistle. Once the archers hear this, they know that the time frame began and it’s time to shoot.

It’s important for the archers not to shoot any arrows before or after the time frame. Doing so would result in a penalty and the archer would lose the points of their highest scoring arrow.

The last signal consists of four or five whistles and it’s rare to hear. When the archers hear this signal, they have to stop shooting immediately and wait for further instructions.

Distance Rules

All archers have to shoot from the same line and have their targets on the same distance and same height.

The distance can vary depending on the competition. In the Olympics outdoor competitions, the target is 70 meters away and 1.3 meters above the ground.

In indoor competitions, the target is much closer at 18.3 meters. It’s also much smaller, with a diameter of 40 centimeters.

Reshooting Rules

There are occasions where the arrow falls or the archer simply misfires. In most cases, archers aren’t allowed to reshoot their arrows, but in a few exceptions, they can shoot their arrows again.

If the arrow falls within the archer’s reach after the misfire, they can pick it up and shoot it again without penalties.

Another scenario where the archer can reshoot their arrow is when they drop it within three meters of their shooting point. In that case, they can still pick it up and shoot it.

Final Thoughts

These are the basic rules you should know about archery. They might shift a little depending on the type of competition but the foundation remains the same.

These rules will enhance your experience If you’d like to join a competition or simply understand what’s happening while you watch one.

Speaking of competitions, if you ever wondered why archers drop their bows after shooting, check this article to understand why.

Enjoy the sport, and keep practicing!

At first glance, archery may seem like a calming sport that anyone can pick up and learn in a few weeks. In reality, archery training has some of the most difficult exercises to master.

So, how do archers improve their form, build their core muscles, and strengthen their mental fortitude? By adding archers exercises to their schedule!

This leads us to an important question:

What are archers exercise? And how can you incorporate them into your daily workout routine?

Archers exercise certain movements that mimic the action of drawing a bow and shooting arrows. These exercises are meant to improve their core muscles while developing the muscles on their arms and shoulders.

If you wanna know more about archer movements that improve your core strength and develop your upper body muscles, you’ve come to the right place!

How Do Archers Stay In Good Shape?

Regardless of which bow they use, archers need constant exercise to stay in good shape. If they’re shooting on a longbow, they require even more core strength to handle it.

Archers improve their form through exercises that place emphasis on their upper body muscles, core muscles, and even hip mobility, balance, and flexibility.

There are potentially hundreds of exercises that are suitable for archers, but we’ve outlined seven essential exercises that will completely revamp your form and technique.

7 Exercises for Archers

Here are seven essential exercises for archers that build your core muscles, strengthen your shoulders and arms, and improve flexibility and balance.

1. Side Plank

Side planks are considered one of the most essential exercises for archers. They improve your body posture and core strength by developing your transversus abdominis, obliques, and glutes.

There are two ways you can do a side plank. You can either support yourself on one hand or on your elbow.

Keep your head in line with your body and make sure your hand or elbow is placed slightly below your shoulder.

Hold the side plank for 30 seconds then rest for another 30 seconds. As your core muscles become more and more developed, you can increase the duration of the plank for 60 seconds, or even, 90 seconds.

Still too easy? Lift your leg until it’s in line with your head. You can either hold your leg up for the duration of the exercise or move it up and down to make the side plank more challenging.

2. Archer Push-Up

Archer push-ups are among the most advanced push-up variations. They build your upper-body strength by working on the anterior deltoids, triceps, and pectoral muscles.

They’re considered much more challenging than the standard push-up. This is because they have a greater range of motion and put more pressure on your upper-body muscles.

Finally, archer push-ups increase your core strength by developing your back muscles and improving stability and balance.

To do an archer push-up, get on all fours and make sure your toes are flexed and touching the floor.

Your knees should also be flexed and you must make sure your hips are slightly higher than your knees.

Your hands should be placed wider than your shoulders and as you do the push up one hand should be extended to the side with your fingers pointing outwards.

Start by going on one side to your unextended arm until your thumb is touching your pec. At this point, your other hand must be extended with your fingers pointing away from your body.

Now, push your body away from the unextended arm and go to the other side. As you transition to the other side, extend your other arm with your fingers pointing outwards and move your other arm back to its normal position.

To check if you have the right form, make sure there’s a straight line formed between your extended hand’s fingers and your shoulders.

If you want other push-up variations that work the same way as the archer push-up, try some typewriter push-ups, pike push-ups, or diamond push-ups.

3. Romanian Deadlift

Romanian deadlifts are among the best exercises to work on your adductors, hamstrings, erector spinae, and gluteus maximus.

For archers, Romanian deadlifts improve your strength and power, but they also do wonders for your flexibility.

To do a Romanian deadlift, place a barbell in front of you and slowly bend your knees until you reach the barbell.

Having a perfect form is not only essential for developing the correct muscles, but they also prevent you from sustaining an injury.

When bending your knees, you must have your back straight at all times. Your hamstrings are the ones that drive your hips backward and forward and if you’re not feeling any stretching in your hamstrings, then you’re probably doing it wrong.

Once you’ve mastered the correct form, you can now do it with the barbell. Again, bend your knees and push your hips backward as you grab the barbell. Then, using your hamstrings, push your hips forward and stand up with the barbell in your hands.

4. Dumbbell Lateral Raise

A capable archer must have strong shoulders that can handle pulling the bow back and holding it as you aim at your target.

The dumbbell lateral raise works on just that. It develops your deltoid muscles and works on your upper shoulder muscles.

Get two dumbbells and align your feet with your shoulders. Then, while holding both dumbbells, raise them slowly until they’re at your shoulder level. Hold for two seconds, then lower them down.

You must make sure that your elbows don’t bend during the arms raise. Also, while holding the dumbbells, make sure your hands are facing your sides.

5. Single-Arm Dumbbell Row

One of the most essential exercises to condition your muscles and build strength is the single-arm dumbbell row.

It works on your middle-back muscles and improves your strength and stability when drawing the bow.

To do a single-arm dumbbell row, get a flat bench and one dumbbell and align one foot, knee, and hand on the bench.

Your other foot must be right beside the bench with a slight bend at the knee. Don’t forget to keep your foot flat on the floor.

Now, grab the dumbbell with your free arm and make sure it’s fully extended. Pull the dumbbell to your chest in a straight line, hold for two seconds, then return the dumbbell to the floor.

It’s important to make sure your back remains flat and aligned to the bench. When you’re done with one arm, switch sides and repeat.

6. Overhead Triceps Extension

Triceps are regarded as the forgotten muscles on your upper arms. Unfortunately, these are the most important muscles for handling the bow and controlling your elbows.

To do an overhead triceps extension, sit on a bench and make sure your back is supported properly.

Grab the dumbbells and lift your hand up parallel to each other. Now, bend your arms slowly until the dumbbells touch your back, then push them up again until your arms are fully extended.

7. Yoga

There are numerous benefits that yoga can offer athletes and bodybuilders, but did you know they’re equally beneficial to archers as well?

Yoga improves strength and posture, enhances focus and mental endurance, all while developing your core muscles further.

Just ten minutes a day can do wonders for your mind and body.

Any sport has a laundry list of injuries specific to it, and archery is no exception. Accidents, incorrect form, damaged or ill-fitting equipment can all cause some serious injuries, but there are things you can do to avoid or prevent most of them.

So what are common injuries in archery?

The most common injuries in archery can be boiled down to five types. The easiest to get are blisters on drawing fingers and string slaps, which can occur on the chest or arm. Shoulder injuries, specifically rotator cuff injuries, and injuries caused by bad handling are also common in the long run.

A lot of these can and very much should be avoided, as they can get dangerous. Read on if you’d like to know more about each type of archery-related injury, how it happens, and the different ways to avoid it.

What Are Common Injuries in Archery?

Let’s address each type of injury in more detail, shall we?

String Slap

This is probably the first archery-specific injury that comes to mind, and the one that most beginners experience.

String slaps happen when the string “slaps” the chest or the inside of the arm holding the bow after being released from a draw. They’re not very dangerous and won’t cause much more than a bruise, but it’ll be a painful one.

How It Happens

Simply put, a string slap happens when things—specifically, body parts—get in the string’s way after being released, and that can only happen due to poor form or posture.

Drawing form, loose clothes, or even the wrong kind of bra can all contribute to the likelihood of getting string-slapped.

How to Prevent It

The simplest solution is to invest in arm and chest guards. These will almost eliminate the chances of getting any sort of string slaps, especially when they’re the right size. You should also wear tight-fitting clothes and a good sports bra.

The even better way to prevent string slaps is by paying close attention to your form. If you’re standing, holding your bow, and drawing correctly, these shouldn’t happen. That’s how pros avoid them without needing armguards.

Finger Blisters

Most people might not expect to get blisters from archery, but they’re possible in your hooking fingers. Blisters are pockets of water or blood, which can show up as a dark-red spot on the fingers.

Blisters occur when the skin is separated internally. This happens due to the friction that happens between the bowstring and your fingers.

How It Happens

When fingers are placed incorrectly on the bowstring, they linger on there for a bit too long, causing the bowstring to rapidly rub against your finger.

This might also happen sometimes if you practice for a long time in one go.

How to Prevent It

As with the string slaps, proper form and hooking your string in the right spot will make this injury less likely, but if you’re still new to the sport, that might take some time to master.

In this case, archery gloves can mostly solve this issue. However, they need to be the right thickness for your draw weight. It’s also a good idea to wrap your fingers with sports tape beneath the gloves.

Archer’s Elbow (Tendonitis)

Archer’s elbow is tendonitis in the elbow, which can also happen in the wrist and shoulders.

When you repeatedly overwork the muscles in your drawing arm and shoulder, the tendons might develop an inflammation. Tendonitis causes stiffness, mild to severe pain, and possibly mild swelling.

How It Happens

Not all kinds of pressure are equal; pressure from the wrong angle can strain your muscles and joints. This happens for one of two reasons in most cases: overbowing and practicing too much.

It happens way too often that archers increase their draw weight beyond their comfort levels as a way to shoot further, faster, or even just for a display of machismo. People might also ignore the pain in their arms or shoulders and keep shooting, which is a huge mistake.

How to Prevent It

Keep draw weight at a level where you can comfortably hold the correct form. If you feel pain in your joints or bones, take a break and recover. If that pain persists in any way, it may be time to visit a physician.

Remember that shooting your bow shouldn’t be an exercise of power, but practice. If you want to improve your strength, do things like push-ups or archery-specific workouts separately from the activity of shooting.

Shoulder Injuries

Different types of injuries can happen in your shoulder, and tendonitis, which is the same condition that causes archer’s elbow, is only one of them.

RSIs (repetitive-strain injuries) in the rotator cuff muscle group, frozen shoulder, and shoulder impingement are the most common.

How It Happens

Shoulder injuries often happen due to over-exhaustion, improper draw weight, poor form while drawing, and many other bad practices.

How to Prevent It

Preventing shoulder injuries depends, first and foremost, on good form. It can take some time to perfect your form while shooting, so be patient. Make sure to stick to a draw weight you’re comfortable with to prevent injuries.

Ignoring the pain in your shoulder and shooting anyway can cause more long-term conditions or complications.

Resting your shoulder and giving it a chance to recover is very important. Your trainer should tell you the best ways to draw, putting pressure on your back muscles instead of your biceps and triceps.

Handling-Related Accidents

This list wouldn’t be complete without the type of injuries caused by equipment failure or bad handling. This kind of accident can happen with both arrows and bows and may occur in a thousand different ways.

We’ll spare you the gory details, but it would suffice to say that these injuries can result in anything between a scratch and death.

How It Happens

A damaged arrow can break under the abrupt pressure of the bowstring when you release it, an arrow that’s too short may be dangerous to use.

Dry firing, firing a bow without an arrow nocked, can make the bow explode, especially if we’re talking compound bows. Crossbows can also backfire when mishandled.

Plus, if you’re not careful with where your arrow is pointing, you might also end up injuring yourself or someone else.

How to Prevent It

Take a safety course. Yes, it sounds like the kind of thing most people neglect, but this is an absolute necessity. Basic training is crucial before you ever handle a sharp arrow.

Also, always use broadhead wrenches, which work like caps for your arrows. You’ll be thankful if you ever dropped one head first to the floor.

Is Archery a Violent Sport?

While the possibility of serious injury exists, archery is far safer than most people would think.

Archery has safety rules that are made to eliminate the possibility of getting accidentally shot or having equipment fail during practice. If you follow these rules, you’re a lot less likely to experience an accident in archery than in most other sports.

Conclusion

What are common injuries in archery?

As you’d expect, The most common injuries in archery happen in the hands, arms, and shoulder. Some of them are fairly simple like blisters and string slaps, but the rest can get serious if not treated promptly.

You can avoid the majority of these injuries by perfecting your stance while drawing the string.

You should also refrain from overworking your shoulders and arms, keep your draw weight at a comfortable level, and exercise your shoulders, back, and arms.

Archery is a super fun activity to engage in. There’s just something satisfying about firing a bow and watching the arrow hit the bullseye.

Is it possible to practice archery in the winter, though? Does cold weather affect arrow flight?

The answer is yes. During the flight, the cold air’s drag affects the arrow. Also, the limbs of your bow stiffen, making it more vulnerable to breaking. As a result, if the archer fails to take the necessary precautions, the cold will negatively impact their aim.

Let’s take a look at how the cold weather affects your gear and what you can do to mitigate the negative effects.

Does Temperature Affect Compound Bows?

Yes, temperature has an impact on the bow’s technical functioning. It also has an impact on the arrow’s flight speed and other related aspects.

If the temperature drops by more than 50 degrees Fahrenheit, you’ll need to adjust your gear in order to accommodate the cold.

Note that arrows are impacted by the air resistance while in flight. The density of the air actually determines the force of the arrow.

The greater the density, the more resistance there is to slow the arrow down. And as you might know, cold air is denser than warm air.

Also, the fletchings’ ability to stabilize the arrow flight decreases.

And if that’s not enough, as the temperature rises, the drag decreases. This decrease results in less speed reduction and a longer distance.

What Happens to Your Gear During the Cold Weather?

Frigid temperatures have an impact not just on your enjoyment but also on your bow. When it’s cold outside, your bow’s limbs tighten. Tight limbs are more susceptible to shatter. Furthermore, using your string in the cold causes it to break faster.

Now, even though wood, polymers, and carbon fiber are all unsusceptible to adverse weather conditions, prolonged exposure to the freezing outdoors can cause serious harm. So, it’s best for you to keep your bow inside (room temperature) when it’s extremely cold.

If you want to shoot your bow in the snow, you must take some precautions.

If you’re shooting with your bow during winter, keep an eye out for snow accumulation, as the build-up could hinder your accuracy. Any component clogged with snow can affect the arrow’s speed and precision.

It’s also a good idea to clean and dry off your bow after you’re done shooting. Water and snow accumulation on the bow over an extended period can develop corrosion and even permanent damage.

What to Do Before Shooting in the Cold?

Bows stiffen during the winter, putting extra strain on the string and limbs. The pressure makes the bow harder to pull back. So, before you venture out to the field, double-check that your bow is winter-ready.

Wax the strings thoroughly. The wax preserves strings from the humidity and prevents them from freezing. When you shoot with a bowstring that hasn’t been waxed enough, the fibers begin to fracture.

If the temperature drops below zero, you’ll need to wax your string before every practice. Before putting a new layer, make sure to remove any extra wax.

Furthermore, make sure the bow limbs are in good shape, with no cracks or deformations. The cold can worsen the brittleness of the damaged parts.

Bows constructed from wood need to be kept dry and protected from the weather. Make sure there’s no bare wood visible.

Make sure your bow is free of any snow. Water is a bow’s worst foe, and chilly weather can aggravate humidity issues.

Clogged components may not function at all. The build-up could alter the trajectory of your arrow, substantially altering your aim.

Ensure that your bow is completely dry and clean before using it.

What to Do After Shooting in the Cold?

After practice, try to dry your bow as much as you can. If you keep your bow damp, it could damage the string and maybe cause mildew to grow on it. As a result, you must only place the bow in your case when it’s dry.

You can use a piece of cloth to absorb the water and then dry it in a warm environment. While it might be tempting. Don’t place your bow near a heater. The bow should not become heated, as this might cause harm.

Before using the bow again, put a new layer of wax on it once it has dried. The strings are made of synthetic materials. If not waxed properly, they’ll deteriorate.

You won’t be able to fix your broken string after it’s gone bad, so you’ll have to change it entirely. If you want to preserve the string from breaking, avoid leaving your bow strung.

What Is the Most Practical Way to Dress?

When it comes to practice during winter, you need to dress practically.

Your legs and head are two places on your body where you can quickly lose a lot of heat. If they become chilly, your blood and core will cool down as well, so keep them warm.

If your core is warm, it will circulate warm blood to your hands.

Wool is great to wear during winter practice. You can purchase a wool sweater and pair it with a T-shirt to retain sweat.

It’s also a good idea to wear a thermal undershirt. To keep air draughts at bay, add a light jacket to your attire.

Jackets that are windproof or waterproof are ideal to wear. A breathable jacket that enables you to move and shoot freely is essential.

Shirts made of fleece and a body warmer that only serves as a secondary layer are perfect for a winter practice session.

Be sure not to get so confined in your movements. Avoid wearing heavy clothing that limits your movement.

If you still want to keep your hands warm, you can wear gloves. However, if you choose to wear gloves, make sure they’re suitable for archery.

Wrapping Up

Does cold weather affect arrow flight? Regrettably, yes. The limbs of your bow stiffen, making it more prone to fracturing. On top of that, snow accumulation might obstruct your aim and cause damage to your equipment.

Wax your bow before and after shooting. The wax ensures that the string on your bow lasts for long and that you have good accuracy.

Wear clothes that allow you to move freely. Also, avoid clothes that cause excessive sweating.

With these pointers, you’ll be able to shoot and hit the golden circle like a champion.

If you’re interested in learning more about arrow flight, be sure to check out our post on arrows spinning in flight.

If you’re getting into archery, chances are you’re confused with the number of techniques and different bows out there. For example, you may not be familiar with the term ‘canting a bow.’

Canting the bow is the act of holding your bow at a tilted angle rather than entirely straight. Archers usually do this to make their field of vision broader and clearer, accounting for more accurate shots.

Let’s get to know more about what is canting your bow and how it can be helpful.

What Is Canting a Bow?

To explain more, canting your bow means holding it with a slight tilt, so it’s a little less vertical when you’re drawing your bow for the shot.

Doing so widens your field of vision and helps you focus on your target. It also requires minimal movement, and with archery, minimal movements along with the correct stances are essential.

Some novice archers find themselves canting their bows because it simply looks cool. However, the bow cant is very common with professional archers, especially those who practice traditional archery.

Before we dig deeper into how to cant the bow, let’s get to know archery a bit more and how it has evolved.

How Does Canting Your Bow Help?

When you slightly tilt your bow, it keeps the upper part of the bow, or as it’s called, the bow limb, out of your way. Doing this can be very helpful if you’re a beginner because novice archers can find it difficult to pinpoint the target, so it helps clear your vision a bit.

Another thing that canting helps you with is maintaining the correct body posture. Beginner archers usually tend to make a lot of unnecessary movements and arch their backs more than necessary.

This can get fixed with time, but it can turn into a bad habit if not addressed early in training. With canting, you slowly learn to minimize unnecessary movements, get used to the right footing and posture, and focus more on hitting your target.

Now, of course, it’s no walk in the park, and it’ll take tons of patience and practice at different ranges to get to a reasonable level. However, you’ll gain muscle memory in the long run and get used to the right footing and posture.

How to Get Into the Habit of Canting

When it comes to getting used to bow canting, consistency, trial, and error are key.

The first step is to keep experimenting until you find the best angle that works best with your physique, eye alignment, and form.

If you’re wondering how you’ll figure out which angle is the best during your experiments, check where your fist points. After you’ve considered what we’ve just mentioned, whatever angle puts your arrow where your fist is pointing will be the best one.

Afterward, try to make your canting angle consistent. Of course, it can change by a few degrees depending on your field of vision and the target you’re aiming at. However, with practice, you’ll get the hang of the angles and how to align them correctly with the desired point of impact.

Why Does Bow Have to Be Level?

Chanting your bow too much or too little might make your bow a bit off-level. Therefore, it’s essential to consider your bow leveling when going for the shot. If you’re shooting without a sight, it usually takes a lot of trial and error to get the balanced canting angle that keeps your bow leveled.

However, because the technology did its thing, most modern bows come with sights with a level feature to help with accuracy. Aside from the wrong canting angle, strong winds might as well be a reason to throw off your bow level, and shooting on places like hills might be a factor too.

When shooting on a slope-like area, a lot of archers tend to lean more than required without realizing it. So always remember to be mindful of your footing and stance, use the level on your sights, and always take deep breaths.

Can You Cant Both Modern and Traditional Bows?

You can cant pretty much any bow you’re using for training. Canting has to do with your stance and angle while shooting; it doesn’t have much to do with the bow itself. So, whether the bow is an old recurve or a modern longbow, you can cant it just fine.

Let’s take a look at the difference between both.

Traditional Archery vs. Modern Archery

As we mentioned before, the most noticeable difference between traditional and modern archery is that it’s no longer just a means to hunt for your dinner. It’s now evolved into a sport that many practice professionally or just for fun.

Another difference between them is the difference in the bows. What was once a handmade instrument for hunting has now evolved with the latest materials. Most bows are now made mechanically.

For example, the traditional bow is an entirely handmade, simple, two-piece instrument made out of wood, with a string created from animal ligaments. On the other hand, the modern bow can be made of different materials like metal alloy or carbon, and the line is made of synthetic materials rather than animal ligaments.

There are a lot of different bows out there, but the two most common ones are the recurve bows and the longbows.

Recurve Bows Vs. Longbows

The most noticeable feature in a recurve bow is that its limbs are curved away from the shooter and not towards him. This bow is known for its shooting speed and intensity.

It’s also known for its easy handling and can come equipped with a lot of modern technology and materials. It can have carbon fiber limbs, and its riser can be made out of aluminum or carbon fiber as well.

An example of recurve bows is the Olympic recurve bow. This bow is a prime example of the evolution of archery, as it can be equipped with sights, a stabilizer, and a leveling feature.

A fun fact about recurve bows is that their name comes from their curved limbs. Because the limbs curve away from the shooter, the bow is called the “recurve.”

On the other hand, the longbow, also known as the D-shape bow, is more on the traditional side. Unlike the recurve bow, this bow has the classic “D” shape design, where the limbs curve inwards toward the shooter. To this day, the longbow is considered the most common and simplest bow to make. In ancient times, it was the go-to for everyone for hunting or self-defense.

Now that we’ve gotten to know more about archery and different kinds of bows let’s see how canting your bow can help with your learning process.

Conclusion

Whether your bow of choice is a traditional or a modern one, canting can definitely help with your aim and learning process. So go out there and practice, and remember to be patient in your journey!

Any archer, whether professional or amateur, understands the need to know the mechanics behind the bow they use. Archers are also aware of the rule that proper tuning helps you master your accuracy.

There are many reasons as to why nock tuning is necessary. Its importance is because the process grants the shooter better control of the bow. Adjusting the arrow’s nock also helps improve the archer’s aim and accuracy.

That said, it’s important that you know what needs to be done when it comes to your arrow’s nock. In other words, we’re going to show you how to correctly tune nocks and tell you how necessary it is.

Is Nock Tuning Necessary?

Adjusting your bow’s nock is an important part of having a proper archery rig. You also need to tune it well, so that your shooting and aim can get better with practice.

A nock works in a way that helps the archer find the right spot for them to shoot their arrows in a perfectly straight line. A tuned nock also ensures that each of your arrows has one side that’s stiffer than the other.

Interestingly, an arrow’s stiff side is the weaker edge of its shaft. Nock tuning makes all your arrows share the same stiff side. This way they’ll have consistent accuracy rates, help your arrows flow straight, and form perfect bullet holes.

How to Nock Tune Your Arrows

The nock tuning process doesn’t require much experience to be carried out perfectly. All it takes is the basic understanding of your bow’s structure and 15 minutes of your time for each of your arrows.

But before that, you need to have the following gear on hand first:

A perfectly toned archery bow

Toned arrows—or just one arrow would suffice

Attach broadheads and check that they’re synced with your field points

Now that you’re prepared, here are the steps you’ll have to follow for a proper nock tuning process:

Use an arrow spinner to check that the arrow’s shaft is straight

Hold your arrow between your dominant hand’s thumb and index finger

Use your other hand to check that your arrow is parallel to the ground and is positioned waist-high

Pull the string towards your body

Rest the shaft onto the arrow’s rest and snug it in the nock

Make sure that the arrow’s feather faces upward

Draw the string back until it hits the slot

From this step on, you’ll continue to adjust the arrow’s direction until your nocking point is perfect. For a four-fletch arrow, you’ll be rotating at 90 degrees, and for a three-fletch one, you’d rotate at 120 degrees.

In addition, make sure that you keep turning in your dominant hand’s direction. Another general rule is to turn the arrow either clockwise or counter-clockwise until one of your cock vanes faces you.

How to Check if Your Nock Is Toned

To make sure that your nock’s fit is proper, there’s a simple test you can do to ensure this. Just prepare your paper because you’ll need to shoot bare arrows through it. For extra measure, you can also get an N-tune arrow wrap to guide you through the process.

Use the arrow wrap as a reference to know where the nock begins and ends. This will help you tone your nock better

Pick a shooting range between 5 to 10ft

Set your starting point where your arrow rest is 13/16th

Shoot your first arrow bare or from the first adjustment point

Note the shape that the arrowhead makes in the paper

If it’s not a perfect bullet hole, position the shaft to the next point

As a bonus, number each dent made to its corresponding point on the arrow wrap. This way you’ll keep track of your progress

Repeat this process and remember to turn the shaft in the same direction every time

Once you get the perfect bullet hole, adjust the rest of your arrows to the same nocking point

Where Is the Nock Located?

On your rig, the nock is the point that connects your arrow and bowstring. It typically looks like a small brass band that’s coiled onto the bow. However, while most bows come with pre-installed nock points, some don’t. You can purchase a clap-on nock if your bow lacks one.

Another interesting fact about nocks is that they consist of two parts, the groove, and the throat. The groove is the closest part to the arrow’s rest, while the throat is the thickest one. To be exact, the throat typically measures around an inch.

As a result, the nock’s simple design helps secure the arrow in its place. When the nocking point is tuned to perfection this prevents the string from being restricted. This freedom of movement allows the bowstring to spin while the archer draws his bow.

It’s important that the nock’s throat remains seated near the string. The arrow will be confined if the fit of the throat is too tight. That’ll make your aim inaccurate and slower your arrow’s flight.

Issues Poor Nock Tuning Can Cause

Many things can go south if you don’t take the time to tune your nock. One of the main issues is that your throw and arrow flow will be totally off. When your nocking point isn’t tuned well, your arrows will fly more to the left or the right, making your aim inaccurate.

Another issue that may arise is the string’s tight hold on your arrow. When the nock is tuned too tight the shaft isn’t allowed to breathe or flow freely. On the other hand, if it’s too loose, you’ll find it difficult to keep the arrow in place, and in turn, shoot properly.

How Important Is Arrow Tuning?

Just as important as nock tuning, arrow tuning is also a necessity. This process helps you gain more control of your bow and not wear your arrows too fast. Plus, a tuned arrow with a broadhead that’s finely adjusted to it will help it fly straighter and faster.

Choosing the right tuning method for your arrow differs from one bow to another. Many archers opt for the bare shaft tuning method since it helps them observe their arrow’s performance and adjust their nocks accordingly.

Final Thoughts

Is nock tuning necessary? Absolutely, because no archer can master accurate aim without proper tuning of their nocking points. Plus, the process itself is pretty straightforward and requires little experience to be carried out well.

Not just that but, nock tuning can help you avoid many shooting problems while out in the field. Tuning your arrow as well will save you a lot of trouble. In fact, you should also make sure that your bowstring is fully functional so check out these signs.

I’ve had my share of setbacks in archery. Arrows flying out of directions, strings tearing off, bow bending out of shape—name it, and I’ve probably encountered it before.

It takes some experience to know when a bow gets out of tune. So, don’t worry if you still don’t know what to look for.

A bow gets out of tune when its cables are stretched, causing the draw weight to get lost while shooting. You’ll notice the string settling into the cam when the bow is out of tune, and the arrow will fly erratically when you hit it.

If you want to know more about turning bows, follow this article!

How Does a Bow Get Out of Tune?

A bow gets out of tone in multiple ways. You’ll know that something is off with your bow the minute you shoot it by looking at the hole or feeling the bow in your hands.

When your bow is out of tune, the cable will be stretched, causing the distance between the axles to grow. As a result, the draw weight will be lost. It’ll be worse if one cable extends more than its twin because the cams won’t work correctly.

Depending on the design of your bow, you may find the cable settling in the cam’s grooves. Needless to say, it shouldn’t be there.

One more thing you’ll notice is the arrow’s flying direction. Instead of flying in a straight line as it should, it’ll move in an erratic motion and may fly off your target. At the very least, it’ll lean to the left or right instead of the center. Likewise, the bow likely needs tuning if it’s straying lower or higher than it should.

If your bow feels fine and the arrow flies straight, you may notice it’s out of tune by observing the target hole. For that, you may need to do paper tuning.

How Do I Paper Tune My Bow?

Some archers opt for paper tuning when they don’t know what’s wrong with their bows. The way it works, you create a target out of paper and keep it at a reasonable distance.

Then, you shoot the arrow as you usually do while practicing, observe the hole’s shape, and start adjusting the bow’s settings to achieve a perfect hole. It shouldn’t be straying far off, right or left.

You can start by adjusting the cam placement and then look at the cam timing. Next, try the bow again to see if the arrow shoots straight. If not, start looking at the other settings. Chances are, there will be something wrong with the cables or strings. You may even be placing the arrow wrong or using too long arrows for your draw length.

Other Methods for Tuning Your Bow

Paper tuning isn’t the only method you have to tune your bow. You can always choose one of these methods instead.

Bare Tuning

To put it simply, bare or bare-shaft tuning includes attempting to shoot an arrow without fletching. Then, throw an arrow that has fletching and compare the movement of both.

The right way to do it is to test from different distances. For example, start by a 5-yard space, then go back five yards, and another five yards, and so on. That way, you should have four shoots until the 20-yard distance.

When stopping at each distance, shoot both arrows—the one with fletches and the one without. Now, take a look at the target holes. They should be aligned with each other without any angle. Otherwise, you need to tune your bow.

French Tuning

French tuning is attempting to shoot the arrow from two different distances on the same straight line. In other words, you can try to shoot the bow from 10 yards away, then walk back and throw it from a 30-yard distance.

The method is meant to test the bow’s accuracy. If it’s not out of tone, the arrows thrown from both distances should form a perfect or close-to-perfect vertical line. You can shoot two or three arrows while on each length.

If you notice the arrows aren’t forming a straight line, your bow may be out of tune. Or, there may be something wrong with your arrow placement.

Torque Tuning

Torque tuning is when you tune your bow by moving the sight in and out. Each time you move the sight, try shooting your bow until you get the most forgiveness out of it.

While doing so, your grip hand should be applying pressure to the bow.

In addition to the sight, you should move the rest and test until you achieve the perfect placement.

After you move both the rest and sight, try shooting the arrow. If it goes straight through the hole as it should, your mission here is done.

If Your Bow Doesn’t Need Tuning, Then What’s the Problem?

Okay, now you tried paper tuning your bow, and it’s still not shooting as it should. You even asked an expert, and everything is apparently in place without the need for adjustments. What’s the problem then?

Chances are, it’s one of these three:

You’re Absentmindedly Torquing the Bow

You might be torquing your bow without even noticing it. Torquing the bow is applying too much pressure with your grip. In other words, you might be gripping it too tight like your life depends on it.

So, before moving on to the bow’s settings, make sure the problem isn’t your technique first.

You’re Positioning the Rest Wrong

If you’re sure you’re not gripping the bow too tight, and the arrows are chosen well, the real culprit is likely the rest. When the rest is positioned wrong, the bow is technically not out of tune because there’s nothing wrong with its string and cams. You just need to change the arrow rest’s placement.

You can start changing its place gently, by 1/32 or 1/16 inch each time. The direction to move it depends on the problem it’s causing.

If you’re noticing your arrows moving slightly to the left while you’re shooting, move the rest to the right. Then, when they’re in the correct position, the bow’s broadheads and field tips should be getting the same spot.

You’re Using Wrong Arrows

If your bow is perfectly tuned but still shooting out erratic arrows, the problem may be the arrows you’re using. When choosing them, you need to consider your setup, your bow, and whether they’ll be right for you.

For example, arrows that are too bendy are known to lean to the right. Meanwhile, hard arrows will prefer the left. Additionally, it’s recommended to choose arrows two inches more than your draw length.

If your bow is tuned and still not performing well, the problem is likely with the arrows of your choice.

The Takeaway

So, how does a bow get out of tune?

It starts shooting arrows in irregular lines, its cables may stretch a bit, and it won’t feel right when you’re using it. In this case, you can tune it yourself if you know your way around it. Alternatively, you can get a professional to do it for you.

If your crossbow is tuned but still shooting to the left, check our article on this topic.

When strung, bows are under considerable tension. So it’s surely not right to leave them that way when they’re not in use, right? Well, it depends.

I had my fair share of discussions over that topic, and I tried both ways. So I can safely say I have the answer you’re looking for.

You should unstring a bow when not in use if it’s a recurve and made of wood. Wooden recurve bows need unstringing because the tension can decrease their life expectancy. On the other hand, modern bows might not need unstringing because their materials likely won’t budge under the pressure.

Let’s further explore the topic by looking at when you should unstring the bow.

Should You Unstring a Bow When Not in Use?

It depends on the type and material of your bow. Most recurve bows need unstringing, especially the wooden ones because they’ll deform under the tension. Meanwhile, the ones made of carbon and fiberglass won’t budge, so you can leave those strung for as long as you want.

For example, longbows made from fiberglass often have a laminated layer for protection. These will be fine without unstringing. You can unstring them only when you’re sure you won’t use yours for a long time.

No matter if it’s a recurve or a longbow, any wooden bow needs unstringing when not in use. Otherwise, the limbs will start bending.

Why Do Some Bows Need Unstringing?

When a bow is strung, it’s constantly under tension. Eventually, the pressure will get the best of the limbs, and they’ll start to sit. When you start using the bow again, you’ll notice that the arms are stiffer and more rigid than they should. So, they won’t flex as they should when you’re making your aim.

The problem directly affects your ability to practice the sport.

Luckily for archers, manufacturers are constantly updating bows to fit modern standards. Now, most bows on the market are carbon, fiberglass, or synthetic foam. These materials don’t sit under tension. They only do so when subjected to heat, which is unlikely to happen.

If you leave your fiberglass bow strung for the whole year, chances are, nothing will happen to it.

Can Recurve Bows Be Damaged If You Keep Them Strung for a Long Time?

It depends on the material. If your bow is old, chances are it’s wooden. Wood tends to deform under pressure, so you may start noticing the limbs bending after a while.

Generally, it’s not recommended to leave the bow strung for a long time.

The bow will eventually be unable to flex, and it’ll be rendered useless. Some bows may survive, but only if stored in proper conditions.

If your bow is wooden, strung, and stored in a humid place, don’t wait for a long life expectancy out of it.

It’s better to unstring your recurve bow the moment you’re done shooting it.

When Should I Unstring a Bow?

Most people will suggest that you unstring your bow every time you’re done shooting it. However, that’s not convenient for a couple of reasons. First, any mistake while stringing the bow may ruin or twist the limbs, so there’s no need to do it repeatedly and increasing the chances of damage.

On top of that, stringing and unstringing the bow takes some time. You don’t want to go through that before and after each training session.

When you practice archery frequently during your active seasons, there’s no need to unstring your bow. However, when you’re on the off-season and only shoot your bow a couple of times a month, it’s better to unstring it.

How to Correctly Store Your Bow

Some people think their bows are ruined because of unstringing. What they don’t know is, the main issue might be their storage means. Bows need to be correctly stored to maximize their life expectancy, especially if they’re made of water-vulnerable materials like wood.

The best way to store your bow is to keep it in a protective case. Some bows already come with cases, but not all manufacturers provide this. Either way, you can buy your case somewhere else. If it’s hard, it’ll be even better because it won’t break or harm the bow if you drop it.

It’ll ensure the bow stays away from humidity and other weather conditions. Plus, you’ll be assured that nothing heavy will fall on your bow or something, causing it to deform.

If you don’t have a case, you can always use a bow rack to hang the bow. It’s the next best option because it keeps your equipment away from your other stored items. Besides, hanging the bow makes sure its limbs aren’t under any pressure.

Of course, needless to say, you shouldn’t hang your bow from its string.

Lastly, it’s better to keep your bow somewhere where it’s not too cold or too hot. Some materials can start bending out of shape under high heat, which brings us to the next tip: don’t store your bow somewhere with a machine’s engine that might be working close by.

Tips for Unstringing Your Bow

If you’re going to start unstringing your bow regularly, there are a couple of things to take care of. For starters, recurve bows may be confusing to string because the limbs look the same. The best way to string them is to use a stringer. Otherwise, you may put the string back in the wrong direction and risk breaking the bow in half.

At the very least, you’ll risk tearing the string off. It’s not a pleasant experience to have your string flying away during the training session; I’m telling you!

If your bow is still under manufacturer warranty, you won’t have an option except to use a stringer to avoid damage. So it’s better to use it from the start, especially if you didn’t unstring a bow before.

One last thing to take care of: dry-firing your bow. Many people would be tempted to try it when they have the string back on. However, I recommend against it because it may put unnecessary pressure on the limbs and cause them to bend, or worse, break.

The Takeaway

So, should you unstring a bow when not in use?

If you’re going to keep it out of use for a long time, it’s better to unstring it to lift the tension of the limbs. However, you should string it back correctly to avoid tearing the string off.
